Why June is my favorite month on Cape Cod

If you ask me my favorite month on Cape Cod, the answer is easy: June.
Not July, when the beaches are packed and traffic crawls along Route 6. Not August, when summer seems to be racing toward its finish line.
June.
There is something magical about this brief window when the Cape feels fully awake but not yet overwhelmed.
The first thing I notice every year is the scent of Rosa Rugosa. Their bright pink blooms seem to appear overnight, lining roadsides, beaches, and hidden corners of town. On warm mornings, their fragrance drifts through the air—a sweet, unmistakable scent that instantly tells me summer has arrived. The birds seem to know it too.
Step outside early in the morning and you'll hear a symphony of birdsong before the rest of the world wakes up. It's one of my favorite sounds of the season. The air feels fresh, the world feels quiet, and for a few moments, everything slows down.
The hydrangeas are beginning their annual transformation. Roses are blooming. Gardens are stretching awake after a long New England winter. Everywhere you look, there are signs of new life.
And then there is the light.
June light on Cape Cod feels different. The sun rises early and lingers late into the evening. The bayside beaches glow with soft golds and pinks. The ocean sparkles. Everything feels just a little more vibrant.
As someone who teaches yoga outdoors, June is especially meaningful. The beaches are still peaceful in the mornings. The sand is cool beneath your feet. The air carries just enough warmth to feel comfortable without the heavy heat of midsummer.
There's something special about gathering on the beach before the day begins. The sound of the waves, the salty breeze, and the simple act of moving your body outdoors creates a feeling that is hard to describe unless you've experienced it for yourself.
June feels like possibility.
It's the beginning of beach walks, outdoor dinners, farmers markets, fresh flowers, and mornings spent watching the tide roll in. It's a reminder that some of life's greatest joys are also the simplest.
Every year, no matter what else is happening, June invites me to slow down and appreciate the beauty all around me—the scent of Rosa Rugosa, the sound of birdsong, the warmth of the morning sun, and the incredible privilege of calling Cape Cod home.
And perhaps that's another reason June is my favorite month here—it marks the beginning of another season of sharing these beautiful mornings with others.
